This past three days I have been in a slump. My winning percentage is probably 30%.

My slump started as I started trying to "improve my game". I got away from my normal civs and strats. I worked on Tool attacks (with 4-5 units), outbooming and beating opponents to Bronze.

Somewhere in all of this my normal resources got way out of alignment. When this happens, my game deteriates worse. I get housed, forget to build barracks (or granary when pit starting), or don't get villas on gold soon enough.

My mind gets worse, and I don't successfully forward build, and play defensive. I lose.

The funny thing is I am trying these strats against good Inter to Expert players (and I play like a Rook). Any advice (other than go back to what works against Rooks/Inter). I lose badly, and to be honest, it is kinda embarrassing.

Sounds like a case of confusion. I felt about the same way wednesday when playing noreveal, after over 8 months away from the game.

My first advice would be: don't get discouraged, keep trying. Think about how you're gonna make those same people *SUFFER* when you get your new strats right.

Meanwhile, if you can't stand the shame of losing many games, you could play under an alias when trying your new strats, I think they call that "smurfing". I never do it myself, but then again I'm not ashamed of losing.

If you persist, it'll get better don't worry. 3 days isn't long, and if you've been using the same strats for a long time, a bit of confusion is to be expected. Don't let it get you down.

It looks like you are in a slump because of play and not because of bad maps, bad random civs, whatever. The plain vanilla standard for me is to tool rush in a 2v2 and to defend and boom in a 3v3. I always send out forward builders to put up a govt center and a second town center in bronze asap. I bypass forward army in lieu of defense army until I get my "second" economy underway at this forward tc. I am very fast with my hands and I group everything. I probably do not play like anyone else you have ever seen but you are welcome to come and watch me today. I will be on at about 5:00 central time as I am in Texas. I am not a particularly strong tool rusher but I can boom with the best given an equal starting spot. I usually have my settings on hardest and so my spot is almost always bad and there is lots of wildlife. I play under the name of __slingblade mostly. My closest friend on the zone is Iron_Ghost. If you see her on, ask where I am and she will call me on the phone. She is my mother in law. We are by no means experts but we have our moments. You are welcome to come watch us play but I am much faster than she is and probably better to watch. The best way is to resign and just watch everyone. Give me a Zone Message or just stop by.

Me too I'm in a *bit* of a slump. Strangely, it has been going on for about a month and a half now (since I started AoE/RoR). My win percentage is about 0%, give or take a few fractions.

The first game that I win will be cause for breaking out the champagne. Hey experts - when you started to play, how long before you won your first game (in terms of number of games and time)?

I don't believe myself to be an expert, so let us dispell that notion right here. However, in answer to your question, I think I lost every single game I played until a player called _never_die_ played me and he was minoans. He came into my town and rolled my cavs and then killed my peons. He showed me the ropes and I owe my start to him. If you see this, I will be on at 5:00 central time today. Give me a zone message and me and my friend, Iron_Ghost will try to help you out if you like. My name I play under most is __slingblade.

br8k_u_n2: Well, that's a very generous offer. Thanks. Unfortunately, I cannot log on at 5pm central time cause I hafta work. I just sneak on this forum during coffee breaks to try to gain some valuable information. I will, however, try to look for you because I have found that you learn best by playing against people with more experience and skill. Everytime I play, I learn one or two little things and a few people on this forum have been very kind to show me the ropes. My zone id is origdavedave.

I agree with you Dave, die against higher skilled players. Keep playing, keep practicing and soon it will be your military in the enemy villagers.

Yup, I have so far made dying a veritable art.

What I can't seem to figure out is how people get so many army units in my town so fast. When they do, I have a measly army of a few archers, one pony and a couple of axemen there to greet them.

I mean they come in there with about 8 heavy cavalry and one or two cats. (???) How do you make that kind of an army without sacrificing tool/bronze times? I get wiped out anywhere between the 15 - 30 minute mark. I am barely out of bronze when I get assaulted big time.

LOL, the deaths in aoe are an art form Players are fast because of years of aoe. Plus, you play the expert settings (noreveal ect.)so your opponents will tend to be better players. I go through horrible losing streaks especially when I'm trying to adapt to a new strategy or new hotkeys.

LOL, now I'm trying StarCraft for the first time, GOD! I suck at SC One good thing is SC reminds me of how wonderfull aoe is, gl and hf.
