What is the 1st tech you research and building you build in the Tool,Bronze, and Iron ages?
Tool age: tech:watch tower-so I can see and go on the offense building:market-so I then can research things to make my advance to the Bronze age quicker then the dock- needed for a speedy advance to the bronze
Bronze age: tech:War Galley-a must for the bronze then the wheel building:Gov't Center then the temple
Iron Age: tech:Heavy Cav. then the Trireme building:there is none, wonder

If you go straight brz: you make market and stable then click brz button few secs after you just reached tool. You do woodcutting (a must) and goldmiming just before if you plan to mine and wallsf course, the upgrades related to the units you're planning to use (in storate pit). Then you get wheel and 2nd woodcutting with FB upgrade:nobility depending on what you're using + writting + architecture (this is later tho). In Iron, free trib and then 3rd wood + gov upgrades (alchermy, ballz, engineering). No temple or so usually. Towers blows btw.

I know towers blow. Or they do when you stumble into a base to raid, and theres a mass of towers. I'm gonna wall and tower more often. Wall in tool, towers in bronze.
but sayign my first building/tech is so, well stupid, I change strats dependign on what I needa do.

Tool: I plop down a market and an archery then research the woodcutting upgrade after starting the bronze upgrade. this will support my boats and CA in a couple of mins
Bronze: I research wheel ASAP then build a gov center and another archery or two. then I research writing so I can see whats going on (in a team game) and nobility.
Iron: I research whatever is needed... and dont build much unless I need to counter the enemies attacks... Iron age is just clean up and finnishing off in most cases for one of the players

My first upgrade in the game is woodcutting as I am bronzing. If I am Mace, the second is stone mining, to give me super slingers for defense. I also get hand to hand attack since it helps my cavs and hops. My first upgrade in bronze is the bronze shield which is expensive but well worth it (if I am Mace, now). If I am a chariot archer civ, the wheel of course first in bronze. If I am in a boat war, then after the wheel, I go war galley. My first Iron upgrade is usually scythe. If I am Hittite, I do not upgrade to catapult unless I am meeting with already Ironed cats with engineering. If not, I keep ugraded stone throwers to add the the scythes. This way the scythes don't get hurt in battle by friendly fire. This is a way I have found to really give Egyptian scythes a spanking. I put my scythes on theirs or their priests if they have them. Then train the stone throwers with engineering and ballistics and alchemy at their stables which go down quickly to st's. My scythes don't take any fire from the st's and I can tear down their scythe homes . This works great for me but no one else uses it so either it is crap for everyone else or they just don't do it. This "non-upgrade" has won me more than a few games.

The upgrades really depend on map and game type. As the other posters say, wood cutting and wheel are primary early upgrades.
