Newbie here with a couple of questions.
Much obliged to anyone who can help.

1) I build my city, buildings, etc... everything is going
great and then I get a message that I have
"Reached my population limit". To me it doesn't
seem like I have that many units. Is there a way
around this? Seems kinda silly that I have to
wait to have some of my other units killed off until
I can build the other types of units that I need.

2) Sometimes I accidentally surround a military
unit with buildings. I found that that unit is now
pinned and can never get out! This seems strange
since my own unit should be able to move in and
around my own buildings.
How do I get the unit out?

3) Is there a way to disband units when they are no
longer needed?

Thanks very much.

1. you can change the pop limit for multiplayer with the patch, but it is normally 50 units...

2. leave a side open all the way or not at all, they have to go around the building, or you can delete the building to get them out...

3. select the unit and press the delete key, wamo no more unit, but you are out of the recs tha you used to build it...

It may seem silly, but it's the pop cap that makes the game what it is. aoe is not just a game about massing huge armies and attacking, its not just a slugfest. The reason behind the pop cap is that you are forced to balance your military and enconomy. Furthermore, you have to balance each separatly, you can only use so many vils for wood, gold, stone food ect. and, you have to carefully pick which military units you want to use, you cant simply just build a hundred of each. Just play a couple of multiplayer online games and you will see what i mean, they arn't realy anything more than a contest to see who can build 100 chariot archers the fastest.

Sometimes I play default pop games (aoe) They are fun but take longer if the map is large or I don't rush 'em to death early.

A tip for AoE 50 pop games is to quickly make 50 vills/boats, fast iron (in 20's) have 20-30 military buildings built, then delete boats or villagers 'till pop 49. Hot-key through all your military buildings, TCs, docks , quickly.
Then you can have 100 pop in a 50 pop game

sure it's a 'slugfest' Butch

I guess then 50 is the pop limit?

Could the limit also have something to do with
the fact that the AI cannot handle more and
the strategy of balancing vils and military is
just an outgrowth of this technical limitation?

What if you are playing a small map for a short game?
Can you limit it to a smaller number?

Also, how do you see your current population
and know what is the maximum so that you can balance
economy/military, etc...?

Thanks!

Actually, its the other way arround. Es made the game with a 50 pop cap, then designed the ai and unit balance arround that. I think the reason was to keep the game moving faster, the more units, the slower you computer will get because of figuring the pathing for each unit. I know aok has a 75 pop limit, but also need twice the ram to run it (32 vs. 64). To see the current pop, just click on one of your houses, it will show you your pop, and how many people you have houses for. One of the function keys will also sho the pop, but i'm not sure which.

If you press F11 in Ris of Rome, it will show the population and time. In Age of Empires it only shows the time.

if u play a multi player game u can set the pop limit from 25 to 200(i think?) most deathmatches are 200 pop, most rm are 175 (from waht ive observed).

Yeah, you're right. You can play a multiplyer game over IP/TCP but then just play the computer without other human player, you don't need to go online to play this kind of game. You can set the pop limit from 25/200 in any kins of scn (scenario)
