I like to have the military units I'm likely to use fully researched, and I build lots of buildings to make them with...
But I then wait for the enemy attack before I train them, so meanwhile the resources are used to increase my economic power.
I also like to use units that cost mostly food and a bit of gold, such as swordsmen, compies, and elephants, because by farming and trading I can usually run an opponent out of resources if they spend much on their attack units.
Rushers usually lose badly if you can force them into a very long game, because they spend a lot of resources very quickly without worrying about later. If their inital attack fails, they're in as much trouble as if you had killed all their villagers.

What civs are good vs minoan:
1. hittite - long-ranged boats on the water, super cats vs compies, with CAs for backup vs anything else.
2. sumerian - super cats, stay away from the water and make lots of farms, pump out the war elephants from 20-30 stables in iron. Back them up with cats to kill cents and helepolii.
3. yamato - go to tool 2/16 vills, rush his docks with scout ships, and scout rush his woodies. "spreading out" won't save him from scouts and scout ships.
4. macedonian - hoplites backed by compies and StS, raze his docks after you demolish his town. Tower up or wall the map as you go, and soon he won't have anywhere left to run.

uhm.. trading=losing deal... this is not aok... 5000 food turns into 4250 gold at MAXIMUM efficiency. usually its more like 2000. 1v1, its usually 0. normal people dont bother with trading either, because its useless for the most part...

When you trade with someone they don't loose gold and don't get the resources you loose, right?

Right, they're pretty much unaffected.
However, your enemies will still try to kill your trade boats even if they know this, to block your access to that extra gold, like they would do with your gold mines.

It's 20 res for 75 gold. You should check before making uninformed statements.
