This is the hard answer: Only play with people you know. Not really that easy but when you do have a good game add those people to your friends list and try to play with them again.

Thinker is right. When you don't have any partners around just stick to 1 on 1's and ask good players, players who give you a fight for your money or beat ya, to be your futur partners. They don't have to be godly they just need to be better then the 15 minutes tool 15 peons choson player we had on our team as 3rd member the other day! It's really more fun to play with people that you know their style of play and which pack a punch.

You can't, it's a fact of life. Teach him to tool faster and thats one less you have to worry about.

No I think you should take him own 1 on 1 and destroy him badly 5 games in a row and then make him quit the game forever by laughing at him. This is without a doubt the most effective way to help the community. It will take you less time to solve this problem and will likely enjoy beating on someone! Joking of course

Usually I just ask "how many vills do you train before tool?".
Moat of the times, it's sufficient to discard newbie parnters.

There are a couple of things you might want to try..

First, Thinker's suggestion is the best, but you first have to _find_ good players, then look for them next time you play. If I play someone good, I'll add them to my friends list so I at least know if they are playing in the same room. I only wish the friends list had grouping.

2nd, specify in the sets, good players only. Yes, this will be ignored sometimes, but the average newbie doesn't want to get squashed like a bug either.

3rd, play with sets that newbies will tend to avoid. I have really gotten to enjoy a random-nomad start. Most newbies will avoid these games like the plague. If someone comes in the room and asks what nomad means, you at least can then ask them what kind of player they are. I don't believe in just "booting" someone, so I would ask them if this is really the game they are interested in, and maybe suggest they find another game.

You will find it harder to get a game started using options 2 & 3, but the games will be much more enjoyable.

Flycat,

Your 3rd selection tool is not very accurate IMhO!
I dont think newbies dont like unusual settings. Usually they play with weird settings like 2vsCPU or cheats on. So I'm not sure your nomad stard will fright them.

And btw, just play the settings you like, not the settings you think will prevent Joe Newbie to join your game.

I think it's better to ask him a question or two about general Ror strategy ("what's your favourite civ for medit", what's your best combo..")
Needless to have a psychology Phd to estimate their skills..
