i am only now starting out on aoe. i played once online, and realized that i need to get this down on one player, before jumping into online competition. but as it is, i get overwhelmed against 3 opponents on hard level. under that im ok ...

how fast should i aim for getting to tool, bronze, then iron? right now i can sometimes make tool in about 9 minutes. i can either go bronze almost immediately after that, then delay long for iron ... or i can delay bronze some and go bronze-iron fairly quick. ... im curious what the population favors. what kind of timing can one make?

If you can tool in 9 and bronze straight away you're doing well. A lot of the time, a very early tool rush can be unavoidable from a good player so don't feel bad if you get rushed out of your original town to start with .

As a general rule, I like to try and press the tool button before the 10 minute mark and have enough food to bronze straight away.

If after any zone multiplayer game you look at the map and the achevs. then its usually easy to see what happened.

In multiplayer games people make a lot of villagers. It is normal for vill pop to be 50-100 in aoe and ror games.

Most make 20/25 real vills in stone, tons of fishing boats and many more real vills once you have a gov. center in bronze.

In the very beginning of any game the idea is to make vills from your tc..with no breaks. To keep up with housing..with no breaks. Each time your tc stops making vills early or you get housed early you fall behind.

Good luck with multiplayer... it takes a lot of practice but online play is much, much harder than any AI. People play totally different than the computer players so it's not a good idea to play as practice vs the AIs. Have fun AoE rocks

Iron times - Bleah Don't bother, Ironing is useless unless you can really use it. i.e. your in the pocket as palmy, it's a long, stretched out game, etc.

If I am playing 3 computer players on hard I will make 25-28 real vills and 4-5 docks with 4-6 fb for each one. The vills are in stone before I hit the tool upgrade, the first dock is right after my pit. I put in more docks as time allows. This all means that I finish the bronze upgrade at 15-16 minutes with enough food and gold to build some cavs or camels and do the second round of pit upgrades right after reaching bronze. If I take out the nearest enemy right away then I will make iron in 24-26 minutes otherwise it might be 30 or longer.
All this changes when playing online because, like Tenaciti
said, human players are much better. You might fight in tool for 15 minutes and and have to relocate while the bronze upgrade goes. You hope your town center lasts long enough for the upgrade to finish while the enemy is hitting it with all they got. Spreading out and building a big econ is much more important in multiplayer than age times.

almost along the same topic ... i wonder ...

does anybody play multiplayer at 1.0 speed? the only game i played multi, was 2.0. going that fast is difficult even against a stupid computer opponent. i cant imagine how you all keep up...

I can't keep up at 2.0. 1.5 is tops for me and I prefer 1.0. Sometimes lag online makes it too slow so then 1.5 seems like 1.0.

my fav speed is 1.0. my reflexes aren't fast enuff to play at 2.0. plus i find it extremley hard to micromanage anything. unfortunatley, a lot of da games on da zone are 1.5 or higher, especially in the rookie rooms where i play. and the games that are 1.0 are jacked up to a higher speed within a few minutes.

your times are pretty good. im at a 9 or 10 minute tool and a 15-17 min. bronze. i iron a little while after that. i iron a while after that, about 30-35 minutes. but i only iron if i think its going to be a long game or if i haven't been attacked (very rare..i usually get tool-rushed or attacked right in the middle of bronzing.)

hi I really love the 1.0 speed, i think its the details for the micromanagement. What each vill carries..weird stuff..it's like majic to me.

When I sucked worse than I suck now( yes i was the worse!) ...i got some good advice which at least helped my game beginning get better.

Practice the first 20 mins of the game over and over at 1.0 speed, NOREVEAL. Then do the practice at 1.5 speed...then 2.0 speed. Sometimes I'd have a spare 10 mins and just practice starts. This simple advice helped me so much!! to adapt.

I also learned that the top players (i asked them!) have played 2000+ games and do 50 or more games a week.

im a idiot when it comes to computer games ,so it may or may not help you peeps. have fun
