As we all know, the helios have become a terrible foe in RoR. I have found it really hard, if not impossible, to play Yamato and be able to beat a Minoan opponent who uses the composite+heliopolis combo. To beat him militarily that is, not economically. In a game I have played recently, I found that my combo of Heavy cavs+HAs was useless against his helios+compies. As my Stonies would have been useless, I didn't have any other choices. The only thing I haven't tried against him were priests, but I think it wouldn't have made a difference, as gold was very precious.
Has anyone got any ideas as to what other choices I might have had?

Dont let them get Helos, plain and simple. Yam are a power in Tool and Bronze, Even early Iron, but Not late Iron. Fully upgraded Helos destroy yams, and dont even need Compie backup, they do fine alone.

yamato has always sucked against minoan. They are only even at sea, and once minoans get comps the yamato is at a disadvantage the entire rest of the game. Even the cheap horse archers won't save them since the minoan gets catapults. I'd say if you are a yamato facing a minoan I'd scout rush followed by a cav rush and then push straight to iron. Do your best to stop the minoan from getting comps and if they do get comps, stop them from getting iron age. If they do get iron age your probably in trouble.

You guys are right! that's exactly what I should have done. I guess, the problem was that I don't remember ever being in a position like this against the Minoans before. Well, I've learned my lesson now .

No civ has fallen faster than Yamoto in the transisiton from ROR to AOE. Cav rush = Camels which is an ugly bloodbath unless you have a 2 to 1 advantage and even then it will be bloody. As mentioned earlier, if you get Yam in a random civ game, Tool rush and tool rush hard. Later in the game, if its a team affair build lots of high strength boats and help your teammates that way. While most units get wasted by helios pretty bad anyway nothing makes you cry more than watching expensive heavy cav get absolutely rocked by helios.

Lets face the facts, Yam aren't what they used to be and your not going to win many 1 on 1 unit battles in iron with this civ (except naval). Scout rush if you can!!!

I once lost a 2v1 (I was 1, and Minoan, and they had 3 more gold piles than me against 2 yams who went with nothing but HHA. HHA do surprisingly well vs helepoli, atleast until the Minoan wises up and whip out the heavy cats. Then you're dead.

I, however, had only helepoli and was out of gold...so they won. HHA, especially on a hill, can beat heles.

I dont know how I can possibly convey how much I disagree with that statement Nineveh. HHA fall to Heles. This is on equal settings Im reffering to. I dont know why someone would walk into HHAs on a hilltop, but even if they did the HHAs would still lose badly. And what if your HHAs attacked my Heles on a hilltop? I hate to think about it. Anyway, fully upgraded Heles have more range (by 2) which will prove a huge advantage. Add in the raw power and say goodbye to HHAs. Resources may be more expensive for the Heles, but well worth it.
