Hi:

I've been playing alot in the zone's rookie room and of course . . . half of the people playing in there are no where near 'rookie' (I think they just like to bully us lesser folks) <pet peeve>. Anyway, I've been in a couple games now where other players were chatting scouting reports like: "Red at 12" or "Blue at 13". Does anybody know what they are talking about? Is there some kind of grid coordinate system that I should know about? If so, it sounds like a neat idea to help each other share scouting intelligence.

dunno HOW somone saud 13, but they mean 12 o clock -- imagine a clock, and see where the 12 would be, and the 6 acroos from it? theres your answer.

Okay. To figure out the clock position, it is actually pretty simple.

In the bottom right corner there is a mini-map. This provides the big picture for what you have explored, where your units are, ect.

The top corner of this map would be 12 o'clock. The far right corner of the map would be 3 o'clock. The bottom would be 6 o'clock. The far left is 9 o'clock. These are the cardinal directions. If there is a number between 2 cardinal directions, say 7, then you would estimate some where between 9 o'clock and 6 o'clock. In this case, 7 would be closer to 6. This gives you an approx. reading.

I think there is a numerical grid, you press F3 or F4 or something to get the x, y values for your pointer on the map, will show up at the menuline.

DOM explains a 16 position method on their website. It's supposed to help locate the enemies and resources more accurately. I'd give you their url, but I seem to have forgotten it. Clock positions are much more popular.

Regarding non-rookies in the rookie room: When I first started playing on the zone, I had a real issue with that too. (In fact, my first post on this forum was about that particular subject.) At the time, it seemed to me that there were very few rookies in there.

What I didn't realize is that the term "rookie" encompasses everything from "flaming newbie" to "experienced rookie." A flaming newbie will tool in 8 minutes with 6 villagers and call you a cheater for having 3 chariot archers in his town at 18 minutes. An experienced rookie will bronze in 16 minutes with a favorable map, but will probably struggle with post-bronze booming. While both of these players can correctly be considered rookies, there is a huge difference in their skill levels.

Yes, there are good intermediates and experts who frequent the rookie rooms, but it's not as bad as you might think.
