I was looking over the top 10 in the ROR rankings on the zone and was shocked to see better than 20% abandon rates and an average of about 10-12% on total games played. All I have to say is gimme a break, your connection can't be that bad. All this does is re-enforce to me the relative bogusness of the rankings. I always used to get somewhat miffed in AOE when I was hovering around 1850 and would get booted from +1900 games. Gimme a break, if you don't abandon and play with people you don't know as opposed to stacking your team and gaming the ranking its real tough to keep your rank over 1900+ and sometimes even 1800 because of who is willing to play you. Anyway, I guess this is somewhat of a rant but I am beginning to remember again why I was no longer playing in the rated room all the time.

I think it is the connections... easily 20% of the games that I have played get somehow disconnected. Usually it's because my system either locks up completely or I get dropped for a bad connection. I've been over this and over this-- I even quit playing on my new Celeron 300Mhz and went back to my old Pentium Pro 200MMX which is more stable. Reinstalling DirectX doesn't help. Reinstalling Windows 98 doesn't help.

I'm much happier now with the old system completely cleaned up, but I still get disconnected. I was playing my first ever ranked game yesterday, and my system locked up after it was pretty apparent that my team would win. Later, I had no problem whatsoever playing a long unranked game.

I have played a bunch of games probably~50. Only 2 games I have dropped. 1 sync and another I lost connection with the server. I would check your ram and make sure you have lots.

Before you start slamming people, you might wanna get the facts first.

-If someone leaves within the first four minutes, BOTH players get an abandon. "I don't like my position, cya"

-If you resign/die earlier than your teammates (exact times are unknown), you get an abandon.

-If someone drops, and the other players pressure you into allying up, EVERYONE gets an abandon.

-Abandons are also given instead of wins, although this seems to berare. (happened to me once out of about 40 wins and heard same reports from others).

I believe my record to be 40-8-6, or somewhere around that area. One of my abandons, that's right ONE, is a true abandon (ISP disconnected). The rest fit into the above categories.

The only bad thing about abandons are the fact that ignorant people (as in don't understand abandons) seem to frown upon them. The 100 point penalty won't effect your rating in the long run. Such is the way of the chess rating system. Your original rating and your penalized rating will converge after X games.

Methos,

I am well aware of how you get an abandon although I certainly question your "If you get defeated or resign before your teammates"

I am also well aware of the four minute rule, which is very much abused. I think it is certainly proper to have issue with a player that doesn't like how much food or wood they can find in the 1st four minutes and quits the game.

As four the allying if one of your teamates drops I typically don't have a problem with this if its early, 30 mins or so but if you have an hour invested in the game the last thing anyone wants to hear is the ally whine. Or better yet the Pause/unpause unti, you ally trick, I love that one.

As a top 100 player, and a good one, Methos, your response and criticism is well received but I don't think I'm going out on a limb by questioning the abandon rates.

I've got 96MB RAM in my Celeron and 128MB in my 200MMX. I'm telling you I've tried and tried and tried.

There's no data on these systems. I think tomorrow I'll format the 200MMX and reinstall with NT 4.0 and Service Pack 4. Then I'll try again.

As someone who administers 500+ Laptops with NT 4.0 on them for 20 hours a week good luck with ROR on your system. NT is a data hog and I wouldn't recommend trying to run a robust multiplayer game on it. It sounds like you have enough RAM and processing speed but NT will certainly tax your machine a bit more than running it under 95. Any MCSE's out there want to add comments please feel free.

Don't look at the os the problem with mosts drops and freezing is in the video/audio drivers. Check and update the drivers if possible. Also increase your cache. Make sure that you have recent drivers even if you have a NEW pc.

Hmmm... I am going to give my honest point of view here. I am an Analyst/programmer. I work on a Tandem mainframe, I master a couple of languages including C/C++, SQL, COBOL, PC assembler and PASCAL. I have a very good experience of client/server applications. I have a university degre in computer science. Internet and communication protocols are REALLY NOT my specialty BUT:

I believe disconnections happens on the internet gaming zone due to difficulty sending and receiving packets between players and the host...

1)
Start a single player game with 7 computers. Take a huge or gigantic map. Try to put as many units on the map as you can. YOU'LL NEVER GET DISCONNECTED (or crash) from your single player game cause of too many stuff going on in your game. NEVER!!! Now that I have said that, do not worry, you have plenty of memory to play on the zone in multiplayer games...

2)
I played AoE on a lan with 8 players. The 10BT communication speed was more than enough to handle all game parameters AND WE NEVER GOT DISCONNECTED from a game... Now that I have said that, AoE is perfectly robust in regard of multiplayer games...

Stop looking at your PC. Do not wonder why ppl are getting disconnected when they have to pass thru 20 servers, 2 satellites and 2 56K modem (or worst) to send and receive a packet...
Have fun reformating your hard drive...

Phil_The_Great

P.S. I have a cable modem and I never get disconnected... I see ppl being disconnected and most of the time it happensto laggers, not players with good connections...

These are all reasonable tips and I would have said the same thing if someone asked me, but trust me, guys. I'm not trying to be disrespectful here, but *I'm* an MCSE, Master CNE, Compaq ASE, and Cisco SupportPro. I know about driver issues. I'm still having trouble sorting this out.

I've got a superclean NT install now. I'll see how that works out. The fact that it's happened on two different computers makes me suspect my modem and/or my ISP, since those are the only things that haven't changed. My ISP is usually great, though, and I'm online for 100+ hours a month, although that's usually from my laptop.

I did notice that although I locked up at the 1 hour 40 minute mark (much better) in my first ranked game, it didn't give me an abandon. It recorded my tool/bronze/iron times and said I played one game, but didn't win, lose, or abandon. Weird.

For you techies out there, Microsoft Technet does publish some troubleshooting white papers for AOE. You can find them on the Microsoft web site.

Oh, and Phil, great advice- but I'm not getting disconnected. I'm locking up my system completely.

Also, don't run screaming from me if you ever see me on the Zone. I finish most of my games. This is just happening enough to annoy me and probably make my ranking (if I played ranked games) look suspicious, which is how this thread started.
