Dont upgrade your scouts. Normally I dont make scouts, but I have a couple villagers to the spot where I want to wall(I will also make sure no villager has gotten psat, so once I am tool(I usually have maybre 1200-1500 food when I am too, in bad games I only have 800-900) I build my buildings, bronze, and get the wall upgrade and woodcutting, and put maybe 8 or so guys on gold, and que up 5 scout boats(normally i have 30 fbs or so and I really want/need to protect them). walls are much better than scouts

I think most will agree scouting is essential to crossing over from rookie to intermediate or expert. Like everything else in ror how you do it is contingent on the game (map, civs, opponents, etc.) On water maps i will always build a scout or even two and upgrade them while im bronzing. This is because food is usually not a problem in a boat boom map. However, in a hills game or non water map i may only build a scout if i plan on a tool attack. Scouting is so essential on these maps for food i will send a villi scouting right away. Word of advice... dont upgrade that which u dont need in your military plan. This is a common mistake rookies make. Focus on the objective of building to win not just building (be selective). The 100 food for a scout can save your ass many times over. Many times i have killed an enemy villi or two trying to forward build by my town with a scout even non upgraded (Most likely wouldnt have found them otherwise). In addition, u must know by bronze where at least your closest enemy is. Without a scout this is difficult. I dont consider myself an expert at skill, but i have played alot. Good luck and i hope this was useful to you.

i don't know how relevant this will be, but i usualy spend a long time in the stone age, so as soon as i tool, i can build and bronze in less than a minute. as i'm bronzing, i make a scout to find resources and sometimes a second to find the enemy. As yamato, minoan, or sumerian, i am know to pull a mean scout rush. 5-6 scouts in your city, in that tender spot just before the bronze age, with a total attack of 5 and armor of 2, i can usualy kill 10-15 villagers like that, and there's nothing more satasfying than following your scouts with a villager and building your military buildings just outside. As soon as the last scout dies from villager attacks, i have camels or cavalry or hoppers or anything early bronze in there. I started like that once with yamato, and had comps and phays in his city while still tool. i think he was roman...
