The Basics
When you play decide BEFORE if you are going to win by building and holding a Wonder or not. When you build the Wonder have more resources than you need to build that Wonder. That way you don't have to wait for your villagers to collect the resources you need for your defense and technologies.
How to Build
Get all your villagers before you build the Wonder. About 30 villagers will do the job, but more is better. That way it will get done faster than adding villagers as you go along.
Where to Build
The best place to build a Wonder is in a corner on the map. That way their is less ways for the opponent to attack from. Another really good place to build your Wonder is on a hill because it slows down units to a crawl and your own units get extra damage for being on a hill. The best map for playing a Wonder strategy is Highland. Do not build Wonder by the water because boats (especially Yamato) can be too overhwhelming. Also another place to build Wonders is by a thick forest. It must be a thick forest because heavy catapults can slice right threw them. By building by a thick forest long-range units cannot hit the Wonder.
How to Wall
In a Wonder strategy walling can be the most effective thing in your defense. You just have to know how to wall. Walling can be used as an alert system. Using the alert system you know where to defend and where they will be attacking from. Walling gives time for you to build defense while your opponent is damaging the wall. Walling also depends on the civilization that is chosen.
If you are going to double wall or even triple wall, space the walls out by atleast 2 tiles apart. Then the catapult splash damage won't hurt the other walls and it will take longer to break down to get to your Wonder.
It is a good a good idea to wall your Wonder because meelee units cannot reach your Wonder. When you wall your Wonder wall it one tile away from the Wonder because smart players will see that and know to bring in units that have range.
If you are playing a water map (ex. Large Islands) wall the very most outer edge of the land. This will be very tedious, but can be very effective. Transports will not even get a chance to land if you wall the out edge. This can be very powerful and an awesome annoyance.
Trees are a great place to have your Wonder snuggled in, but they can have their disadvantages. Heavy cats can slice their way through the tree and straight to the Wonder. It is best to wall the inner side of the walls and the outer side as well. That will give you enough time to try to get the cats before they get to your Wonder.
A great technique against big and slow units (ex. cats, elephants) is to put many one-block peice of wall around your Wonder. It is very hard for War Elephants and such to manuever around. With a few Horse Archers mixed in there, they will be gone in no time.
The Civilization to Be
Although, you know your favorite civilization the best, I have come up with a couple of civs that work the best with the wonder strategy.
Babylonia -They are great because they get their wall and tower hit points doubled. Along with that the priests rejuvenate 30% faster. Priests are very powerful units in a wonder strategy and could mean life or death. If you were Babylonia you would use towers everywhere and to endorse that Babylonia get +20% stone mining.
Another civ to be is Yamato. This civ may be good for when not playing DM. The "Horse units" cost 25% less. It is great for retaliation when cats charge into your wonder. Yamato have all the upgrades in the Government Center. Alchemy and Nobility are ones to upgrade. There is a bad side though, they do not have the technology Jihad. Jihad is one of the best upgrades when playing a wonder game.
Upgrades
These upgrades are for building a Wonder. Since I don't know exactly what civ you are going to play I can't write down all of the techs. I do know, however, you will absolutely need armor and attack upgrades for the main units you are fighting with.
Imperative Techs:
Architecture
Wheel
Jihad
Recommended Techs:
Writing
Woodworking
Artisanship
Craftsmanship
Ballistics
Alchemey
Tactics
Once you begin building the wonder don't be on offense! Just hand tight and wait for THEM to attack. Priests are good when they break into your base. Have (5% of the defense for your Wonder already trained and ready to go. Catapults aren't good to defend the Wonder because of splash damage and lack of accuracy.
Like it? I know it isn't long so I am not sure to send it to the academy or not. Give me your opinion! Thanks! ------------------ Do you want to be on the Radio? Then don't drink and drive!
