bored one day and wanted to write a guide for this civ. 2nd of all because I think that
there is some confusion about palmyra and the civs abilities and I think I should clarify. I
have probably played more games with palmyra in RoR than any other single civ in RoR,
so I have experience with them, almost all of it is from team games.
Much of the strategy in this guide is left up to the player, Im sorry for not being exact with
the details but give me some time and I will develop a much better guide for this civ.
First of all, some basic facts about palmyra.
Free Tribute
Gold per trade ship doubled
Villagers cost 75 food, have +1 armor, and work about 33% faster.
Camels are 25% faster
1) They get the slinger and the camel. This is important because their tool time can
sometimes be a bit later when going for a strong bronze, and in bronze the camel/compy
combo is crucial.
2) They do get the chariot archer, but because of wood requirements I choose to not use
this unit when playing Palmyra. Generally speaking I prefer the CA to the compy, but
when playing Palmy in a team game of 3v3 or 4v4 with good teammates I prefer to iron
rush. This tactic works extremely well with palmyra, simply because I can average a 21-22
min iron time using palmyra on a medit. map, which is the most commonly played.
3) Dont underestimate a palmyrans Iron strength! They get many of the most commonly
used units, including but not limited to the Heavy Horse Archer, the Catapult/Hcat,
Armored Ele, Ballista Tower, the trireme and the fire galley (so their sea power is pretty
decent). Their techs include Every stable unit except for the cataphract, Ballistics,
Alchemy, woodworking/artisanship, wheel, nobility, they get the jihad upgrade to vills in
late game (which are some powerful vills with that upgrade), all storage pit upgrades
except tower shield and metallurgy. They have a pretty powerful iron compared to most of
the civs if ya ask me, and their econ can support them much easier.
4) Yes I know it. Palmyra is a bit slow in the early game. Which is why they are a great
choice for team games, free tribute man! And besides, I dont see as much tool rushing as I
expected on gigantic maps (which are very common, along with huge)
ok now onto the part you have all been waiting for (or hoping to get it over with) the real
strategies.
When in stone age, Build one house or two. I normally build one house, because
you wont need that other house for a little while. Take the vills and scout. Now I will
branch this guide into some different sections for a few diff map types
Medittaranean: Once you have tooled, I normally dont build more than one or two vills in tool if possible. Some things to remember to do in tool age: Now in late tool I take a few guys off of food and perhaps one or two of wood (about When almost to bronze I will stop making fish ships. I should still have a vill scouting, and I will usually get an ally (hopefully) to trib about 200 gold, because they are staying Once in Iron uprage archer armor to +4 and artisanship, lay down 3 archery ranges by an Take the HAs you built in the forward base you scouted out near the enemy and attack Ignore any military resistance from archer, dodge and run from siege weapons, and simply Now take your new trireme fleet and fire galley fleet and go harass some people. If your Your partner should be doing ok, perhaps tribbing them some supplies is a good idea, You should now at this point continue building villagers (you should actually queue a few I cant really tell you how to balance out your resources, all I can say is this. Put a lot of In your opponants base that you just cleared out, make sure to build some STs and That is a really rough description of how to play palmy on a medit map with 3v3 or 4v4 The only time I would vary this strategy greatly is when the other team truly makes a large Well now I guess I will write about the next map type, which is Continental... Same start as on a medit map, granary or SP first (I wouldnt dock first on this map, In my experience, continental maps can be pretty harsh to any civ, so therefore I dont play Tool time is not as important on gig map cont., because you are less likely to be attacked The strategy on this map, from what Ive seen, is to attack in bronze. So I suggest taking a Something I have seen on this map that is not common on the others. I call it Forward Once in iron follow up with necessary combos, palmy is pretty flexible so use units that I think I will stop this guide at this point. The only other map I have a lot of experience All text within this post is mine, and I am quite aware this is not the first palmy strat guide Any feedback is appreciated, because in the future I hope to revise and add more sections Here are some opinions of mine on different various things the ideal setup for a palmyran-medit map, medium resources, stone start, reveal map on, the ideal team on a map to play palmy with-hittite, hittite, palmy for a 3v3 I chose to add a minoan player for the cheap boats and someone on the team has to have a Thanks for reading this guide, it took a while to make, so if you have any negative Like I said, constructive criticism pls, and if you feel I left anything out by all means say
Some people ask the question Granary or Storage Pit first? Well I would
probably go for the granary first, but on many maps I have pitted first, even docked first
with success on a few occasions. Make sure that if you dock first it is 1) A smaller map
than gigantic, too much time is wasted scouting for the water and for a good spot with
visible fish, if you dock on a spot with low fish, you are pretty much screwed 2) A forest
nearby. This means you have a forest within one villagers line of sight, I dont know
exactly how many tiles this is but thats a rough analogy 3) Are not on the outside of the
team. Docking first results in a possible great iron time, but your tool time will be hurt
considerably more than the opponants. I rarely dock first when on the outside of the team.
Medit...This is probably the most common map type, which is especially sweet to
the palmyrans, the combination of boat fishing and vill building is great. On this map I
normally build somewhere between 19 or 20 vills and a bunch of boats before tooling. The
reason for this? Simply because when in tool age I plan on building scout ships to not only
protect my fishers, but to destroy others fish ships. Many player may leave their fish ships
unguarded, which is pretty bad. Destroying an opponants fish ships early on with two
scout ships will easily buy your team some time so that you can go for that nifty iron rush
(I think a few ppl from the forum may have seen my iron rush/jump with palmyra...)
I suggest playing with a good hittite player, because his scout ships can really disturb
opponants, even better when he is fed with some wood by the palmyran player
Farming shouldnt be required just yet, but it may be if your map is really bad. I normally
put a few more guys off of food and put them on wood to ensure the construction of more
docks and boats (sometimes I have 3 docks built, and tho you may find yourself really low
on wood you will rake in food)
Remember to save 300 wood for 2 tool age buildings
Remember to wall in as much as possible, I know I should have said more about
scouting in stone age but I didnt, I think you the player should know that
Never, ever, ever leave your fishing ships unguarded! This is a big mistake, and in fact
when an opponant is attacking my allies fish ships, sometimes the best solution to the
problem is to equalize the attack by using my ships to attack his own that he left
unguarded at his village.
6-7) and stick them on gold. I upgrade archer armor, and usually woodcutting and/or
wheel at this point while waiting for the upgrade to bronze.
hopefully he will find me some new docks. I normally trib a little of things to teammates
now so they can hold me off for a while cause I am trying to go for a quick iron (if you
can get triremes and Fire Galleys on the sea first, you can dominate)
bronze for a little while longer than we are. You should probably have enough food and
gold to iron at about 19 mins, and so you should hit the upgrade button. At this time I will
try to take guys off of food and put them on wood. Save wood for ship upgrades and
forward bases and siege weaponry. I think I forgot to tell you to upgrade war galley while
waiting for the iron upgrade, so im telling you now
enemy if you havent done so already, the iron rush is not nearly as valid. Ask your allies if
they need econ or military aid, of so then try to help them asap, but not now. Remember
to research trireme as soon as you get to iron, (you may still be waiting for the war galley
upgrade cause you forgot to hit it until you were already part of the way to iron. If so,
thats ok, it happens to me sometimes too
trireme upgrade, and being building more war galleys at one dock, and Fire galleys at
another (wood is usually low at this point, which is understandable, cause I find myself
tribbing wood to allies in many cases, or sometimes I just dont have enough)
with those 3 HAs...go for villagers, preferably woodcutters. The Objective of a medit map
is to own the water, if you can do that much your opponants are at a serious disadvantage.
If you take out his woodcutters he is going to have trouble building boats to fight you on
the water, and also building siege weapons.
outrun slower non ranged units. Make 3 more HAs and continue until you have pretty
much cleared his village of villagers (and siege weapons)
opponants are iron by now you should be ok, all you need is a few tris and a few FGs on
each guys docks. War galleys stand very little chance against this combination, and docks
get taken down pretty fast by fire galleys.
seeing as how you wont need many resources, because you have just cleared the closest
enemy away and they have to go through your forward base first, or trannsying over
(sometimes I even wall my shores...not a bad idea, even with dominance of the seas they
can sneak a transport by, its a large map with a large body of water)
vills as soon as you hit bronze...23 or so vills is not enough to keep a really strong econ,
but then again this depends on the pop limit also...)
guys on wood and gold, because you shouldnt need many food vills. Many of my games I
will research scythe chariots because they trash siege weapons nicely for the non gold
price tag. This requires wood and gold, so make sure you get enough!
ballistas to clear out military buildings...if you can lay down a front line at his place you
have gained much territory. When looking for gold mines to mine, why not use his? good
idea
(sure do wish zone.com would bring back the 8 player rooms)
effort in bronze to dominate the ocean and the land, in which case I would spend more
bronze time building war galleys and helping my allies fight. Late iron times are expected
in this scenario, but palmy does not generally disapoint in bronze (I recommend camels,
compys, and STs for a good flexible bronze age army)
because fishing is not as good, and wood is not as normally close by )
them much. But from my limited experience with them I will tell you what I know about
playing palmyran on cont. maps.
with scout ships. But dont take this for granted, because you still need to wall up, and its
more than likely a good player will send ships for you.
little more bronze time to build an army before ironing, just a thought, but once again if
your allies arent getting attacked and neither are you, by all means go iron.
Docking. I have seen players actually build a dock near mine in tool age or so, and make
scout ships out of it to harass my fish boats. It works quite well if you dont catch it, and it
sorta stops you from attacking his fleet. This strat has been used on me a few times now,
with some success. I dont know, try it out a few times and see if you like it, its something
new
counter each other and suck the map dry of resources.
with palmy on is Narrows, but that map is not only instable, but kind of a cross between
cont. and medit, so I think you should be able to use the basic things I just gave you now
and play that map with some success.
(I think it was Grand Pooba who wrote the first one) but admittingly, I have not read his,
so if any material herein is the same I apologize for any confusion (I do not plaguerize)
for this guide. I wrote this guide really loosely, because I feel that the game can get
unpredictable at any point, in which case it is up to the player to decided what to do. Thats
what the games all about isnt it?
3v3/4v4
hittite, hittite, minoan, palmy for a 4v4
full naval fleet
Not to mention that minoa brings some bronze power too, along with plus range compys
to take out camels...
comments pls say them in a constructive manner, none of that “palmyra sucks dude” stuff,
I dont wanna hear that
so.
