For me pitting varies depending the number of stragglers
nearby. I usually ensure theres enough houses to support
continuous villager production.

Never put 5 on berries unless they are in either a perfect line or form a perfect box around your granary, otherwise use 6... every second of delay on villagers = slower bronze and less resources when you get there..... Ditto for walking.... its a no-no....
I find the best strat to get that dock up fast is:
1) 6 on berries, almost always....
2) 7,8,9,11,12 stragglers..... 10 builds a house and explores
3) Do NOT build your first pit at a sweet spot unless it is closer than wood only..... build your pit at the CLOSEST FOREST to your TC....remember that every second spent walking is a second spent not gathering, you are better off using that sweet spot as your second pit--- always have a second pit or you are tool rush toast..... On conti I use vil 10 to start my pit, usually I'm hitting vil 14 and I need a house right at the same time, i'll usually leave 3 guys on strags after i get 120 so I don't wait for that 30 wood..... On medit same deal except villy 10 MUST find the water. Vil 13, or 14( if water is closer) will follow depending on how far water is...
4) If you don't get that dock up by five minutes you MUST get on a second land food source or face the wrath of the 16 minute bronze..... at about 8 minutes is the time to pit that second food source, preferable a sweet spot-- zelle/wood is fine and usually fairly common.... I'll send maybe 3-4 guys to slaughter the zelles, then build a pit... pretty soon those berry pickers are done too... put them on these zelles too, you only need another 300-400 land food max.... as soon as you hit the tool button, preferably at or about 10 minutes... those zelle hunters are now more woodies.....
