IMO, based on experience, I have found that Slingers are awesome for the following purposes:

1. In Tool Age:

- Kill Watch Towers (amazing how fast just 3 of them knock down one Tower).

- Kill Bowmen (a boon against the deadly Bowmen rush! Without Slingers, it's goodbye Villagers...)

2. Bronze Age

With a little upgrade (that you need later for Siegecraft, anyway), they really shine again at killing Sentry Towers - just use 5 instead of 3 per Tower.

Again with the upgrade, they can help Roman Swordsman to fight CA, and are useable at helping against CA, but not that much, because CA fire from afar.

3. Iron Age

- Upgraded Slingers STILL take out Guard Towers - maybe 7 or 8 per Tower, for good measure.

4. Slinger Competence for All Ages:

Slingers are great wall busters!... Why desperate in front of a wall-in?... You CAN now penetrate it in Tool Age with the aid of Slingers, something you could never have done before!...

In summary:

their best abilities involve tearing down walls, killing bowmen and killing Towers.

Highlight:
Breaking into a Tool Age wall-in is no little thing, rest assured.

One more thing that Your Old Friend here learned by losing...

Yes. Slinger is a unit I need to look in more.

Yesterday I played a game 3vs3, I had an army of 4CAs +2camels. My nearest neighbour lost a lot of vills to such an army - he was in bronze but no army - we had boat war before this, and I stopped his fishing operation. My army moved on to next enemy, he is still in tool around 18-20 min in game, with a large army of slingers (15 -20 ?), probably warned by his ally. My pathetic army without upgrades were defeated in no time - I managed to take 1 CA from there and hit his woodies and killed a few before he finally herd his slingers up and killed it. I thought camel kill slingers - but when it is a large herd, even camel goes down quickly - I think I killed only 2 or 3 slingers.

I wonder whether armour protect units from slinger's rock ? Does it count as missile or hand-to-hand attack ? Or no armour can reduce its attack.

The Slingers deal piercing damage, I can't remember where i read it, but I am 100 per cent sure that that's what they do. BTW, how large an army of CA's and Camels do you think his Slinger army could have taken on?

Slingers are amazingly eefective against CAs. The biggest problem is that the CA are of course faster and with slightly better range. but if your opponent cannot micromanage the CAs slingers are the bomb. Camels of course shread slingers to bits.
