The last couple of days I've been creating a application which you can use to display civilization properties, unit properties, and technology properties. Along with this information, what else should I give the user of the program access to? I've been thinking of making mini-guides for each civilization like a guide to the Assyrian chariot archer rush...can anyone help me with the civilization guides for civs like Greek and Palmyra -- I'll put the information in my program and give you credit when I compile it, then I'll post my program up on this forum for the angels to put in the granary section.

So, give me any idea that you think will be cool!

Okay, start posting...

At school, using the CADD program, I started to make a new foldout with the full tech tree and stuff, but I hit a dead end and now school is over with so I never finished it. I couldn't figure out how to import the little guy icons, like the pictures when you click on something.

Do you mean you were making a program or a printable document? Importing those little unit icons is fairly easy, all you have to do during the game is CTRL-F12, use a program such as MS Image Composer to resize/cut the image, save it, and import it in the document.

yeah that is a good idea. i think that you shold make a thing like one tech tree thing i saw. you could check the units that you want and it would tell you the civs that had them. and i guess you could maybe have it so that it tells descriptions of the units and what they are good for. and if you are really in to this i have animated gifs of a lot of units... keep reloading my sig to see al the ones i have. it is random you know

Okay, I finished the intro picture (the one that will show up for a couple of seconds as the program starts), do you guys like it and do you have any ideas to improve it?

Here is the picture:

In case you are wondering I made it in Adobe Photoshop using "Alien Skin Eye-Candy and Xenofex".

Ruvim - that's great

The only thing I would change is the contrast between the background image and some of the overlying text. The words "Quick Tech" show up very well, but the blue and black text, IMHO, blend into the background a bit too much.

Anyway, great idea for a program. What kind of programming language do you use?

Hey Ruvim what language are you programming it in? If it in Visual C++ and you need any help don't be afarid to hollar. I don't know if anybody uses the prorgams that i make but here is a link to them if you want to see a sample of my work. members.tripod.com/~ULT_WiLD/Tweaker.zip

Ruvim...I was making a printable thing. I know how to take pics during the game, but i could't get the pics into CADD.

The pic is broke
Are you talking about the buttons that you use to build buildings/units research techs etc?
if so is it something like this?

to get these buttons...just open up slp studio like you normally would, but instead of opening graphics.drs open interfac.drs and look in the .slp files there and you will find all the different buttons

And for those who don't have Internet Explorer...Get it, Netscape (or whatever your using) sucks! j/k But really please get it! My new site will be IE only. You can get it here

And if possible, can it be an in-game program? I would HATE to have to alt-tab every 5 minutes. If you could get the window to float above the game that would be great.

What are you talking about borg? What graphics folder? I am really confused.

Thanks for the remarks and comments guys! I will change the contrast of the text a little so it looks clear, I was going to use SLP Studio because otherwise it would have been a pain CTRL-F12-ing every time I click on a unit.

Also, I'm making this in VisualBasic 5 just because it is a rather simple program but I will use technical graphics programs and some ActiveX plug-ins to make the program look nice. I am done with the intro section already and it looks awesome so far, you can say my program is in the alpha stage.

Oh yeah, if I did make this a in-game program there would be some problems with peoples video drivers because the program would run well in-game but the Age of Empires graphics would invert colors. I'll check it out a little more and if anyone has another idea or some code for VB to preserve the background graphics then I would really be thankful!

Ruvim, how about unit upgrade costs that aren't included in the manual?

hmm...the upgrade unit cost is a good idea also...Cherub Desert R, I know that there will be a in-game tech tree for Age of Kings, but as soon as it will come out I will make a more advanced tech tree for the game and make some unit information thing and strategies for each civilization and stuff like that. Same goes for the AoE tech tree program that I'm making.

Well, Have you seen the AoK tech tree? As soon as the bugs are out the Tech tree will be pretty darn good.

i seen the aok tech tree....and it is pretty confusing actually....also u have to be in the game playing to view it.....it would be better to be a separate program like the aoe help file....

Ruvium you should change the color of the black text at the bottom.. it looks like aol instead of aoe! as for my contact stuff we have..
grqg@ev1.net icq is well you know it is in my evil sig.... Btw multiple sigs in a post dont take extra time. they are only cached except mine cuz it has javascript stuff. i have a dancing camel that you could put. he walk kinda weird because i put the frames out of order..

Here's a suggestion: add a mini-guide for all the units/unit lines and buildings. For instance, for Phalanx:

Phalanx:
--- hp --- armor --- piercing armor
--- food --- gold
--- from building
Upgrades from --- for --- resources
Upgrades to --- for --- resources

Effective against: ---
Vulnerable to: ---

Phalanx are useful in killing barracks and stable units, with the exception of elephants, due to their slow speed, however, they are vulnerable to archers and siege... etc.

Oh, great idea Taion Arcunus! I'll have to do that too. I was planning on doing it a different way but yours is better.
