Hi this is my first time in the Rise of Rome forum. I am always in the Age of Kings forum. This is my first question.
What the heck is pathfinding?

Pathfinding is how well the units can get to where they are going (i.e. picking the best, fastest, shortest path and not getting stopped as much). Most multiplay games put it on default because it increases lag.

Close. Actually, it increases turtling, since it uses more CPU power to explore its available paths. From my experience, if everyone has really hot machines, there seems to be little change in the lag. But if anyone starts turtling, the game loses its appeal quickly, as it changes from just a delayed reaction to extreme jumpiness (walking peons will appear to "teleport" a few tiles...) You are correct in that few increase this value.
Keep your stick on the ice.

In AOE and ROR, whatever the pathfinding setting is, never trust it. Always watch the units you send away, guide them with waypoints and help the lost ones.
