Well here's an interesting fact that i only discovered recently.
We all know that stone mining gives slingers +1 attack and +1 range, but after some mind-numbing scanning of the manual, i found out that all shields give missile weapon protection to slingers, and siegecraft gives another +1 attack and range. That gives fully upgraded slingers an attack (against archers this is) of 6, a defence of 5 and a range of 6.
Ok, so only wierdos use slingers in Iron, but this is something to bare in mind if you're versus Minoan (catapults? who cares...)

(with annoying accent) Yea them gosh-darn slingers can sure take down one o dem puny little centurions. No kwestionne abote et! 't makes me laugh en ah see a armore elephente. yes gosh-darn it all them slinger sure can do take out an armore elephente. Yes sirre.

no, you couldn't make a ton of slingers. logistics applies to every barracks unit except slingers.

Oh, okay, it musta been Bronze Age only then. I knew it was one of the two. Still, CAs should win, cuz they are faster with longer range.
