Scarab, now that you're changing it anyway, why not reducing the amount of byes? Now 7 teams will get a bye in the first round which is quite a lot. If you're not focussing on having 16 teams in the second round you can reduce the amount of total byes given through the entire tournament from 7 to 3. It goes like this:

We got 25 teams at the start.
12 play vs 12, 1 gets a bye

We got 13 teams left now.
6 play vs 6, 1 gets a bye

We got 7 teams left now.
3 play vs 3, 1 gets a bye

We got 4 teams left.
2 play vs 2, no byes

We got 2 teams left.
1 team play vs 1 team in the finals.

Note the reduced amount of byes here.

But more important! Almost everyone can play in the first round. Being on a "bye" team before, I kinda hated it to miss all the first round action and wait a week to play. Of every "fun" tournament like this one, the first round is always the best one, since it's most crowded.

Fun was the main goal of it right? Well having almost everyone playing in the first round is most fun for everyone. Please reconcider the 7 first round byes. Thx.

Having a bye anywhere but the first round would not be fair

Most elimation-type tourney have all the byes in the first round. The idea is to make the tourney as fair as possible after the first round.. ie.. we will then have a 16 man field left.. Good Luck to all of us.. neilkaz..

Presenting the (trumpets please) TOURNAMENT RANDOMIZER
Written in C++
heres the exe- match.exe
and here is the source code match.cpp
You run this on your computer and it will make all the first round matches entirely randomly, by team numbers, 1-25, run it a few times to ensure yourself these matches are entirely random.... Note that I didn't cover one instance where two byes might come up at the end, in which case it would run forever, this is very unlikely...however, if it takes more than a few seconds to come up with the first pairing, shut it down and run it again, the chances of it happening twice are essentially nil...

WHEW, I did it!

Forget about that little DOS utility written by Jakester. My online Tourney Bracket Randomizer is much easier to use. Try it out:

Kurtiebird's Tourney Bracket Randomizer

This little proggie is sooo easy to use...just type in all the team names, press the "create bracket" button, and Voila! It even prints the results in bracket form, easy to print or copy the source and post on the forum.

I worked fast and furiously on this, so please try it out and let me know what you think.

Scarab, neil

Agreed!, but in high competition tournaments! What can be more fun than having everyone playing in the first round? Sure for competitive chess tournaments or backgammon tournaments or others they want a total number of 2,4,8,16,32,64,128 etc. players asap, but for God's sake, this supposed to be a fun tournament, not some highlevel competition. And btw Neil, I think you're taking this tournament way too serious. You also have to remember that half of the players in the tourney are only average players, players you probably would call "rookies" when you play them in the Zone.

Besides Scarab, on your way, if a bye team pulls out of the tournament, then what? You only have 15 left and need to give a bye in the second round again.

Ooh well, I thought this tournament supposed to be a fun tournament in the first place, seems I was wrong.

Potejon

I think you are mistaken about the avoiding a Gig map. Each round is a best two out of three with the first game of the round being a Gig Coatsal, the second being a Large Hill Country, and the third being a huge Narrows. The second round games use the same ma sizes and types.

You will still be playing a gig map regardless of whether you get a first round bye.

Well I thought we had survived the first round already.. oh well I agree that total randomness should apply !

You should have the byes early ... if teams pull out then their next round opponent gets a bye.

Hey pote keep up the practice on big maps ... it seem me, lucifer and you are all small map specialists... doh good match up heh..
