OK. I'm a little slow. But it occurred to me on my way to work this morning that ES has managed to inject some cynicism into their game. All you can research at the Government Center is military-based stuff. The only arguable exception is Architecture, which simply gets villagers to finish military buildings a little faster and get back to work. The Government Center does nothing to help the economy. The Market, on the other hand, is all about improving the economy, although the government has adapted (perverted?) a number of the technologies for military use, i.e., the wheel, the wood upgrades, and now they even figured out a military use for improved stone mining...

Can't believe a cynic like myself took that long to see it...

That's great... the government center stuff doesn't help the economy. Funny!

Oh! I get it.
The goverment subsidizes whaling in order to support their military machine, while using peons to collect enough food, wood, and gold to upgrade the weapons of mass destruction and baby killing catapults. Meanwhile, the free trade system is being used by the man as well, even turning big corporate stone companies against women and children, spreading death and destruction by supplying slingers with their cowardly long range weapons.

Or not.
