OK I might be insane... I don't play DM much and don't profess to be good at it... but it seems to me that phoeny would be a decent choice for DM... They have legions (although not as good as Rome or Choson, when you have 150 of them, it doesn't matter much) cents (although not as good as Greek, they still kill all land units), armored elephants (although not as good as Persia or Carth, they still are good), fully upgradable priests (although not as cheap as Choson or as ranged as Egyptian, they still own elephants), Ballista towers (not as ranged as Choson or as strong as Baby, but still great for holding ground), Scythe Chariots (not as strong as egyptian, but still great for flooding). The only thing that they lack is good seige... but they seem to have a good counter to everything that anyone can throw at them... About the only thing that they have problems with are heavy cats backed by helopolis... and those are units that can be avoided easily by faster units... And you can slow them down by forcing them to move through layers of towers... They have a great unit mix... The opponent won't know if you're going to legion flood, scythe flood, cent flood, armored ele flood, or some combination of them... Is phoenecian a viable option for DM? And if not could someone (preferably someone good at DM) explain why they won't work? Thanks

Phoenicia in DM, non islands, non 1v1, you gonna get whooped.... And heres why... DM is generally a battle of huge proportions, first off, without the final upgrades for scythes, legions, or centurians, the opponent can use a similar size force of the same units and win resource for resource. Cheap Armored Eles are good, but vs a choson, a common pick in a Dm, eles are NOT the unit of choice after the first several minutes (i.e. an initial ele rush with persian can be devestating, but given the time to research all priest techs those eles are toast) Without seige Phoenicia is toast to heles, and hcats backed by anything that can kill scythes decently fast.... Phoenicia is one of those jack of all trades master of none type civs, and thats NOT what you want to be playing in a DM, especially a team game where the name of the game is complementary bonuses, playing two phoenicias vs your typical hittite/choson combo is going to result in a quick death to the phoenicians, as cheap priests and legions on steriods (and helopolis with no inherent extra bonus) complement hcats that won't die quite well.... Remember in a team DM its ALL about complementart bonuses, you want to be able to win big resource for resources (thats why kills mean little in a DM-- whens the last time you saw a choson with a positive kills ratio, but since those legions cost only 1/5 the cost of catapults..... ) To recap Phoenicia in a DM is generally a no-no (except maybe a 4v4 where all you have to produce is elephant) because : Only one land military bonus... lack of final iron upgrades for ALL super units except ballista towers and juggernaughts.... Lack of seige means helopolis by themselves kill a phoenician pretty good, throw in some hcats and you've got one dead phoenician.... And lack of architecture means those buildings take forever to go up-- when your opponent has 4 buildings to your every three and is producing units with more armor/attack than you, you know you are screwed....
Now on Islands, super juggernaughts are worth more than cheaper ones, phoenicia can be a winning choice here....

I personally think that Phonie is prety good. See, if you play them like chosen, only use AE instead of Leigons, it can be Deadly. They also have an awesome economy that can play an awesome support role to your allies. Their ellies might not be the strongest units in the game, but they are the second cheepest gold units in the game, meaning that you can mass for a long time before running out of gold. Some one said that Chosen could rip them up?, Well Scythes kill chosen leigons, not to mention 150 ARmored elliephants. AE can take out at least 3-5 leigons (I think) and they only cost about twice as much as a leigon. Not bad compared to other units in the game. And if you get lucky and find rivers in you Highland death match, you can rule all the fords with your jugernauts, and take out Heles, and balista towers, well I got to go
