I have been doing a number of medium resources games (team and 1v1) and have been getting tool rushed. It is hard to see coming because with the extrat food, people can build villies and a tool army, so achievements doesn't tell alot. I can see if they have explored, but that doesn't mean they are rushing. Logic says I build a tool army for defense, but that will hurt my bronze time and I shall get hurt if they pass on the tool army to go for a fast bronze. Launching my own tool rush seems to be the safest alternative, but I don't like having to be locked into this strategy. Any tips from people who have done medium resource starts would be helpful.

Thanks.

My experience is that spreading early around map is more important with higher resources. Make docks on two sides of the continent. Don't put all people at same pit. This usually gives you more easily time to bronze, despite of a tool attack. Have some gold ready when you reach bronze age, so you can get rid of those enemy tool units.

With smaller than large maps I think spreading does not help, but you have to do extensive villager scouting and counter at tool the tool attacks.

If you're always being tool rushed, you can always wall in and go turtle, while building a handful of tool age units (not too many, or the food wastage will really hurt) such as bowmen and shoot his units down from your side of the wall.

Try a concerted villager explorer. It takes some micromanaging, but the sight of an enemy villager roaming your opponent's TC in Stone may be enough to make him go turtle. If he kills your villy, at least you know his position, if he doesn't...you can always turn the tables.
