Last night on the zone I set up a room for my standard game:

1v1, large, narrows, 1.5 speed, 75 pop, no reveal, default start, random civs.

My rating is around 1700, so I'm decent. Not great, but decent. This player comes in who's around a 1656, so I figure we're pretty even. He wants to play but wants a 125 pop, so I agree. We launch the game and he gets Shang and I get Greek!!

I figure I'm dead in the water. I get a good start and tool around 10:30, and get a bunch of walls up. He'd evedentally decided to forgo the tool rush and was trying to out boom me. No hard thing to do with shang. My scout vill had found him and I built a seige and 2 academies as soon as I bronze. I had a good fishing op going so had plenty of food waiting. I pumped out 10 phalanxes and 2 STs and moved in at around 18 minutes or so.

I don't know what this guy was doing.

My Phalanxes kill about 15 woodies and my STs are waxing the two towers he had built. After hitting the woodies, I hit the apratment complex. He'd built all his houses in a big block and my phalanxes went through them fast as you please. A few more phlanxes and 2 more STS. A few chariots show up, but my STs smear them as I'm keeping them close to my phals. Used my vill, built a stable got 2 cavs and a scout to track down runners. Mop up took about 10 minutes.

So I waxed Shang with Greek! Heh.

Final tally had him with 52 vill vs my 39, and of those 52 he had about 12 boats. He must have been WAY overconfident when he saw I'd been given Greek.

I think Greek will be my new civ.

sounds like ya played a newbie...

Hate to burst your bubble but greeks are the most god awful civ there is... was... and ever will be. Any equal game will have a shang all over the Geeks @ 10mins =)

Nicely played ! You completely outplayed your Shang victim who didn't have a clue how to use Shang vs a bad civ in 1v1. Where was his scout rush that should hit you by 9:30? If not that where was his fast bronze rush? He just sat in his camp and let you build bronze buildings on him and chew him up w/fast hoppers and ST. What was he expecting to do? Iron rush? You beat a guy that had no clue with Shang. WELL DONE and good that you refused to be passive and die. But, I repeat, the guy had NO CLUE ! - neilkaz -

Both of you are completely correct; poor guy had no idea. Now even and average play can do a decent bronze rush with Shang as 14 minutes or less, and that's WHILE booming.

I was surprised is all becasue he had a mid 1600 rating and had played around forty games, so I had the impression he at least knew the way around the map. Maybe he figured I was going to try a fast iron since Greek is so worthless until then. Who knows?

You know, all Greek needs is a missle unit to be effectivel give them compies and you could get through bronze to iron most times. Is it only their warships that are faster? I'd like to see them make greek fishing boats fish 30% faster. That would be a cool binus for the boat boom. Yep, compies and 30% faster boat fishing and greek would be a player

Greek Academy units are 30% faster (and they get Aristocracy too).

Very similiar to a game I had last night too. Not random civ though. One vs. one, I chose Macedonia, he chose Choson. I'm practicing using Mace so I attack in bronze. I didn't scout very well so when my army finally got to him it was 45 minutes into the game. He was either a rookie or not paying attention to the game. He had only war galleys for military units on two oceans. All his galleys were either in the center of the ocean separating us or on his edge of the map. He didn't even guard the shallows between us. Meanwhile I ignored the sea and hit him in a woodpit/ housing comples base. He had about 12 houses all in a block. once I destroyed the forward base he resigned. Maybe he was practicing his shortcut keys? Ridiculous game.

Hey Wilder God! that is exactly how i used to kill people in AoE.

People have no clue how to play Greek, and hoplites tear down stuff so fast, (especially houses) that the opponent can't build...
But ofcourse.. in RoR...

I'm not supporting Greek... they are a terrible civ. However, they can be a lot of fun to play. I've won more than my share of zone games against newbies before because they made the mistake of letting me get Centurians. If you don't kill a Greek before mid-iron, then they definitely have a strong period until their gold runs out.

I once played a 1v1 random civs game and I got Greek vs. Assy. I couldn't believe he didn't attack early. I built a forward base and sent a token attack, which wasted some of his time and scared him, I think. I remember building a ton of hoplites back in my town, then just trying to hang on for as long as it took to upgrade them to Cent. I didn't attack until I after I clicked the Cent upgrade, and BOOM those guys do a lot of damage.

Still, it was the inexperience of my enemy to let me survive that long. Whenever I see that someone has Greek, they are my first target in the game. Keep 'em on the run and steal their gold. Without gold, Greeks are easy pickin's.

If greek servive tool and early bronze vs shang they just about won. The reason some people dont like greeks its cause they never play em. And they get all surprised when I get greek in the room, its so funny "you sure ex?" lol. And at the end of the game " I guess greeks are allright". I guess greeks just fit my style of playing.

I really dont see how greek survives bronze either. Saying that if they survive early bronze vs shang is completely wrong. I have so many units to choose from to counter your hoplites, including composite bowmen, chariot archers, my own hoplites. If you make STs, I make STs. I make chariots. I make camels for your cavs. Fact is that in bronze greek just cant win over shang, who will also be iron ahead of you. And lets see greek bronze take on early shang iron of ballistas, cats, and horse way buddy!

I think akaval was talking more along the lines of team games. i dunno. in a 1v1 game, i'd never pick greek (that's never, as in against ANY civ) (well, except maybe choson, but any idiot who'd pick choson in a 1v1 deserves to die). in team games though, especially against someone who's able to fast bronze and protect you so u can iron jump, maybe they'd be viable. overall, i'd choose mace over greeks, i think, just because i don't think greeks are all that great in early iron. you'd have to be ABLE to get the helep upgrade to be viable. it's the only arrow resembling unit they get. other than that, no doubt about it. greeks bite.

ah, I used to pick Choson in 1v1 a lot and win with them thank you. A mild tool rush followed by a tower up in bronze and a quick iron and then you've won the game. Chosons iron just rocks, especially in 1v1 games.
