For some civs, the villager carrying capacity is 2. Is this a bug? 2 seems really low. I just tested it with scenarios and it seems that Phoenicians, for one, get really stilted on the food, gold, and stone gatherers- they can only carry 2 without market additions (which bring stone and gold a bit higher), while other civs have no problem with the normal 10.

Its because the villagers had jihad. That reduces them to 2 without any upgrades.

Yeah, Jihad actually cuts vill carrying capacity by 8.

Yikes! And Jihad is usually the first thing I research after I build a temple. Well I suppose I can live without it if it's also going to cause such inefficiency.

Actually...Jihad speeds up Villagers enough so that they make up for what they can't carry. In other words, they "move faster" and "carry less" so it is still equal to the way it was before the upgrade.

Does it really speed them up that much faster? If they can only carry 2 of what they used to carry 10 of, they'd have to be five times faster. They don't seem *that* fast.

I have run a bunch of gathering and speed tests and here's what Jihad does....Ordinary 1.8 speed wheeled peons now move at 2.1 , this is no where near a sufficent speed increase to offset the loss of 8 carrying capacity unless your workers are close to the pit. Farming and hunting drop to a carry capacity of 2, so make sure your farms are next to your TC/granary and your animals are near a pit/TC or they will rot away. Most iron age civ's have wood carry of 16 so Jihad drops that to 8 which means for the typical 40 wood forest tree, your woodie needs 5 trips to the SP, rather than 3.If you don't pay attention you may find they are running 10 tile to the SP, and you lose a lot of efficiency. For, mining most guys only take a couple of steps anyway so you wont lose too much efficiency.
I probably don't get Jihad soon enough. It can make a great deal of difference. Anytime you are using forward builders with your attack, it is very important that they survive! Jihad helps them survive. It is nice that it takes 2 cat rocks or ballista hits to kill a Jihaded peon ! Jihad is a must before any late game tower rush. Jihaded peons make great cat killers, too. I just had a fun game with Choson.. we won.. I had at least 120 legions(loving logistics !) Jihad helped my forward builders( a BIG necessity w/Choson since its unit are slow and towers are awesome) survive to make more rax, temples, and towers at the front to keep my army supplied w/fresh reinforcements. They also killed a few stray cats that hit distant mines in a resigned allies camp!

In my experience, the only time the efficiency penalty comes into play is woodcutting, as that is the only time that your distance increases significantly with time. A long walk mining stone or gold is 2 tiles. That is a short walk for wood. The solution is to increase the number of SP/TC. My experience is after jihad, you don't notice the penalty if you place the new building anytime the forest line increases to 5. After cutting a long time into the forest, you will see

ttvSSS.SSS.SSS
ttvSSS.SSS.SSS
ttvSSS.SSS.SSS

where v is villager, t is trees, S is your SP/TC, and . is just a placeholder to denote the space.

And don't worry. If you have 10 choppers, I *think* you make up the wood in under 15 sec, and after that, its just bonus wood.
