I installed aoe and ror on my girlfriend's computer. It will not play any sound or music. When I click on a .wav file in the sounds folder it opens windows media player and says that no hardware could be detected. These are the only 2 games that do this! On my computer whenever i click on the .wav file it opens the same player as my active movie control. She has all other sounds working with a Soundblaster. Any ideas? Greatly appreciated!

First we need to know this;
win 95 or 98?
which sb card you have?
what other games work ok?
and are the sound and music options turn-on in AOE?(yes it is a silly question but it must be asked. I am not being funny)

Kinda of hard to guess without this info.

She is running win98. Creative Labs SoundBlaster Audio PCI 64V. Total Annihilation, Starcraft, and Sorry. AoE, RoR, and Star Wars monopoly have no sound. The error that she is getting says: "Error: cannot play back the audio stream: No hardware is avilable, or hardware is not responding. Error=80040256" I checked the sound controls in the past and they were turned down. I turned them all the way up and returned to the game. Still no sound checked controls again and they were back off. As I said her pc is using Windows media player to play her other sounds. We tried to download some .avi's to see what player it used and it attempted to play from we like Real Audio or something. My pc has active movie control and media player(not windows media player) in the accessories->entertainment menu.Her pc does not have these, just windows media player. Thanks for any info. I would really like to play when I visit her :-)

Sounds like a bad install of windows. Win98 should come preloaded with those componets. One more question.

Was this an upgrade?
If not than try to reinstall the SB software.
If yes check the Preformance tab in Systems Properties, for file system and virtual memory. These s/b 32 bits. The windows media player is the default for win95.

Hope this helps.

thanks for the help. She purchased the computer in August from Gateway with win 98 preinstalled. I will now contact them and find out what the deal is. (if I can get ahold of them, had a time getting through to them or adequate responses) Again thanks for all the help!!

I would just hit the computer a few times, that might work...unorthodox I suppose, but it has worked for me (no joke)

Do you have dplay50a? if so, install it. I find it fixes several problems with dx, its worth a shot.
