Our three opponents were non-forummers, but were all friends so we knew we had a tough game ahead. It was set team against set team. I will tell the story from my side and hopefully don and king will tell their version.
The civs and starting positions for us were:
RajunCajunBoy 9 o’clock Phoeny
Donovan_darius 6 o’clock Minoan in thepocket
King_highlander 4 o’clock Minoan
Opponents were:
Brown 10 o’clock (not sure what civ, but he had EA, WA, and tris) might have been Persian
Red 3 o’clock Minoan
Green 12o’clock (Hittie) in the pocket
I started off with some glorious hill berries I also walled off the narrows because my little plan was exposed. I managed to bust through and disrupt his woodies a little bit but was now behind. After the walling I was fighting a losing naval battle with brown. At the same time king was having trouble with red. After I walled, it gave me time to bronze. So I took a gamble. I gave the immediate sea up to brown and queued up chariot archers and camels. I also built four docks right by donovan and started pumping out war galleys. Brown was systematically destroying my fishing boats and docks down the coast. King then asked for gold and I gave him all I had at that time and I sent 6 CA and two camels to help him out. After I had about twenty war galleys I attacked brown and darius helped me. We wiped out his attacking fleet and I went up north to harass him with galleys. Meanwhile king had not only recovered but had started advancing on red!! I think this was a real turning point in the game because if he wouldn’t have done that I think brown would have busted through my wall and I had no real defenses there. Right before this point our scores were much lower than our opponents. Darius and I sent a fleet of ships to brown to make sure he didn’t get thru my wall. Darius was iron and had triemes and I still had galleys. We raised a bunch of hell but they kept fighting us off. King was booting red off his land so we had them occupied on sea and land. I went iron and just started pumping out triemes and we kept the pressure up. On land it was a stalemate. On sea were were gaining ground. I got fully upgraded scythes and attacked red, who was now at three o’clock. He repelled me with heles and cats. But our triemes were keeping him from advancing. All of a sudden the screen freezes and you know somebody is gonna drop. Oh no!! It was king_highlander. Just when we were getting momentum. You could almost feel the other team regaining confidence. I was getting ready for some tough battles when I remembered that it was a standard victory game. I asked darius if he could build a wonder and he started making his preparations. I started walling off all the shallows with fortifications and was building a huge defensive fleet. I then asked darius if he was sure this was standard victory. I told him we would feel mighty stupid if it wasn’t I could just picture the other team at their computers going, “wtf, a wonder!!!” He he. If they would have built a wonder earlier they might have won the game. I guess everybody is so used to conquest games they forget to check what the victory conditions are. It was desperation time for the other team. I knew that they would throw everything at us. And they did. Helos and heavy cats came from the 3 o’clock position and EA and WA and helos came from the ten o’clock position. I beat back the attack at ten by borrowing some helos and cats from green with my trusty upgraded priests. The attack at three was slowed by triemes, scythes and a maze of fortification walls. Now the wonder was finished and the clock was ticking down. That is agonizing when the game is at 1.0 speed A huge brown fleet of triemes came out of nowhere and started pounding me and darius. The helos and cats were advancing ever so slowly at three. The attack at ten was abandoned by the enemy. I was pretty sure we had the game won when suddenly I was dropped to a sync error. Dohhhh!! I waited in agony in the room for darius (king had left by then). About ten minutes later he emerges, VICTORIOUS!! Actually it was funny, because when I dropped due to the sync error the screen showed I had resigned. Darius thought I was being cocky and letting the game end with just him in there. He thought I was watching after I resigned so he kept chatting to me. I thought this was pretty funny. Darius told me they never came close to the wonder because of all the walls. A few points about the game: That was some game for me. I would really like to hear king_highlander and darius’ side of this story. Please post a reply fellas. Don’t feel bad king, I missed the end too
