This weekend I played in a number of memorable games. The first of which was an answer to
Staffa's offer.Friday in the WorldWide room, I wanted to 'take a shot at the title' and decided to go one-on-one against Staffa. As soon as I typed in the initial settings as Host ( "Me vs Staffa" ) the room was filled. THe settings were 1v1, no reveal, speed 1.0, narrows, pop 100, large map, random civs, standard victory. When _Bane entered, one of the five waiting to watched dropped (thank's Pritz_ , hope you got to watch one). I launch, and the civ gods give us both Palmy. I was at 10, _bane was at 6. The berries I find at first were sandwiched between water, forest and gold. I dropped a SP by the wood + gold and was lucky to have SF inside 6 tiles. My next building was a dock, since I had a ton of fish near. I had two scouts and two artifacts scanning the map, and I found Staffa late in stone with my scout that was at about 4 hp (damn lions). After he was sacrificed, my second scout built two barracks about his granary.
Here's where I made two mistakes that cost me the game. First, I made far too many FB's, by the time I tooled, I was short on wood. Second, never club Palmy villagers, or use clubbers without armor (really dumb on my part). You can add not walliong quick enough to the list to round out the third mistake....three strikes.....well, his camels marched in an it was game over. I'd like to say it was stage fright, or that I got a bad civ....but that's not the case. I made too many stupid mistakes. Hopefully, I'll get another chance to play Staffa again. Right after that one, I hosted a wonder race. It was a 4 player FFA, continental map, pop 150, no fast civs, no military units, must win with a wonder. In the game were Potejon, Fangr, and someone who must not have understood what "no military" ment. He dropped after I reminded him. So it ended up a three player ffa. Pote took Egypt (lt blue) and was at 5, Fangr took Minoan (red), and was at 2, and I had Egypt (blue) and 8. Yellow had Palmy and dropped, at 10. It was a very intense game towards the end. Unforutnately, Pote had to drop. (boo!) I had taken over yellow's camp and controlled the left side of the map. I staked out my wonder spot and walled in bronze. I was the first to start constructing the wonder (followed closely by Fangr)...and I finished it about a second and a half before he did (I post screen shots soon). At this point, I had three deep fortifications at the perimeter with tons of towers and priests. After a valiant attack (futile though ) the clock ticked down with me winning by five years!Saturday was the APC's first forum party. We had a great turn out. After chatting for a while, RajunCajunBoy wanted to go 1v1 with people watching. There were problems (disconnects) and that didn't happen (til later! w/o spectators). My first game was a slaughter. It was a 3v3. one sync error later, we had a 3v2 advantage. Another drop, its back to 2v2. I think that Kurtiebird was my ally, and our remaining opponents were APC_Doink and APC_Armagedn (could be wrong about the enemies though). It was punishing; ele's, Hcav's, uhhh. We ran like ants from a huge magnifying glass. We got caught...end of story. My next game was against RajunCajunBoy in our 1v1 that was delayed earlier. The settings were large islands, huge map (maybe gig), no reveal, speed 1.0, standard victory, any civ. I took Minoan, RCB took Phoeny. I built three docks early and new I had to control the sea with my cheap boats. RCB tooled just before me, and had a lone scoutship searching for my fb's. I had boomed nicely, so I had the wood to spare for a 1/2 dozen scout ships to put the hurt on his fishing. He sent a tranny with three villys to my, they died real quick! Unfortunately for him, at the same time, I sent one with 5 vils to his island (bronze by now) and built a tc, two ranges and a seige workshop. I took his island. He made some ele's, but I saw them early enough to build temples and a bunch of priests before they reached me. (thanks for the ele's, Cajun!) We swapped islands, he had a swarm of sc's from a base I neglected to smite. :-(
I owned the sea and eventually won with a wonder.Next game was 2v2, random civs. It was APC_Kurtiebird and APC_Armagedn vs myself and Angel Macrat. They got Choson and Roman, we got Hitite (Macrat) and Yam. I had a good start and found Armagedn at six. Built two stables, one scout (then I bronzed and out come 8 cav's. He ran with some of his remaining vils to Kurtiebird; I followed without attacking hoping for this and hurt Kurtiebird as well. Macrat's CA's closed the deal. Good Game, gentlemen.
(sorry this is getting long)Last but not least, Sunday I played a 2v2 with APC_General, Kurtiebird, and an unknown. It was a cont map, General (blue, Minoan) and I against Kurtiebird (brown, Assy) and his ally (yellow, out to quick to notice what civ)(tech..something). His ally was not good. The random civ gods gave me Baby. I find yellow at 2 and knocked him out with upgraded axes (General's clubman helped too ). after that, we decided for a free for all. General's troops routed me from my first base and made life hell for a while before he had to go. He would have won had he stayed (me thinks). Anyway, I finally hit Kurtiebird, who has a ton of Broad swords (Genral hit him too). I made a bunch of cav's and was losing the economy war. I built a bunch of towers to knock his troops out. He then started a wonder. I eventually broke in a knocked it down. I was about 10% away from the Scythe upgrade when my ISP disconnected me. Next time, I guess.Good Games to all, I look forward to the next time we battle
