As usual, I need to thank my partners for taking care of me in this game. (I'll get to my assault in a minute.) I bronzed just after Persepolis resigned, and immediately started making short swordsmen. I knew S_Hemlock was on his way. I had a lot of swordsmen ready by the time his slingers came to town, although they did wreak some havoc before they went to meet their maker. Due to my inexperience, however, I thought I would now have some time to get to the iron age (Legions!) without any trouble.
Big Mistake! I had spent a ton of food on bronzing, slingers, and broad swordsman while I was fighting hemlock, therefore, I was delayed pretty bad. I forgot to wall in, even though Kurtie told me to do it in the beginning of the game, so I was ripe for the pickin' when Hemlock sent in his Cavalry and Camels. It was frustrating watching him running past my broadswordsman with mounted troops killing my villies wherever he went. Eventually, he tired of running and pillaging and made a stand, whereupon I defeated his raiding party.
The next thing I did was WALL UP!
I put my few remaining villies back to work, but I was still terribly short on food. I slowly built my economy up to a max vill count of 20. lol
It was at that point that I sent my troops to Perses town, but Hemlock already told that story well.
After Kurtie said to coordinate attacks, I asked him if I could iron first, and this had to be well past an hour into the game. He tribbed to me, and I ironed, built stone throwers and about 80 Longswordsman. That was when I was ready to rock & roll. I didn't get legions because I was consumed in the action and I forgot to build a temple! Duh! That was my biggest mistake of the evening (morning?)
Well, I saw all the mayhem and carnage that Kurtie had caused on his way down from 2 to 9. His force was impressive. Unstoppable, even. By this time it was 2:30 AM, and with Kurtie's huge force this battle shouldn't take too long. His ballistas will take out eles and my almost-but-not-quite-choson-legions would march to the Wonder. Then, as you know my Hero, my Saviour, my Fearless Leader, Kurtiebird, got dropped! I didn't have any choice about what to do. I assaulted Borgboy, Hemlock & Prince Ruvim with 4 stone throwers, and between 70-80 Long Swordsman. Ha! They should've been trembling. Besides Borgboys eles, the biggest difficulty for me was negotiating 70 foot soldiers through Hemlocks maze-like town planning. There were double walls everywhere, houses, farms, buildings, more double walls not to mention elephants and archers causing trouble as well. If Kurtie were here, his ballistas would've blown a path a mile wide and our troops would have poured through the gaps. As it was my forces had to slog through narrow winding streets to get to the wonder. I didn't have time to clear a path. Unfortunately, this caused my troops to fight one-on-one with eles or anything else in the way.
As a man possessed, I plowed on. The seventy LS slowly perished, as they worked their way around the diabolical maze that Hem, Borg & Prince concocted. I lost one stone thrower on the trip to the wonder. Once there I started to attack. Borgs eles were taking their toll on my troops and it wasn't long before I only had a few left. One by one my st's got trampled.
I had five LS left and the wonder had about 96 hp's remaining when I made my final assault. The Brave-Five, as I called them, marched to the sea, to finish off the wonder, and secure victory. As they neared, a shot rang out. Then another. I had come in range of 10 or so Triremes that were the "bad guys" last line defense. It wasn't pretty. I shudder to think about how my brave troops left this earth. I've got a screenshot but I don't know how to insert it here. Can anynone help? Thanks
P.S. I don't know what I would've done had I destroyed the wonder, because I didn't have any food, gold or troops left. Alas, I never had to find out.
That was a great game guys, I enjoyed it immensely, especially with Kurtie's help. [This message has been edited by ChubbyHubby (edited 04-16-99).][This message has been edited by ChubbyHubby (edited 04-16-99).]
