This past weekend, I played a ton of RoR with and against a lot of AOEH forum posters. I touch on the highlights, otherwise this thread will be longer than War and Peace.

Friday after work, I saw Jehu floating in the zone, and hooked up with him for a couple of games. The first one we got creamed. It was a 3v3, cont whoever our opponent was (Green) he carried the other team. It wasn't pretty. We got to know what a punching bag must feel like. After we threw the towel in on that one, Jehu told me that made him feel mighty intermediate, and couldn't leave on that note. So we hopped into a 3v3 intermediate only game with one of the guys who'd just cleaned our clocks (SpeedyJoint was the name i think). I don't remember all the details, but we crushed them rather easily.

After a small pause in playing, I decided to play some more. I hooked up with O_Captian, Kurtiebird, and Field_General and we played a few 2v2 together. The games we played were a blast. Field_General and I teamed up against Capt and Kurtiebird. We won the first game (thanks to General) and I don't quite remember the second one (j/k). We lost the second one. Either late in the second game or (not sure here) early in the third, all of a sudden, I had "Problems communicating" with all three. Not sure exactly what happened, but the games were easily the most fun that I've had playing yet.

Saturday, I recieved the great honor of getting my butt kicked by NoSoup4U, Neilkaz, and Strat_Caesar twice in a row. The first game, I held my own; hitting Caesar hard with about 20 slingers early (if only I had read NoSoup's guide first!) Unfortunately, i didn't pay enough attention to the slingers, who decided to attack a building while they were being cut down. (I was tending to my economy). One of my allies needed help since Neil was nice enough to attack him. I was playing Egyptian, so I built four or five ranges and started on a bunch of CA's. It's a good thing that I did, since Neil was in my town moments later with camels and CA's. I held him off. Later in the game, the other ally of mine (Bud_something or other) was b*tching up a storm about "Damn Cat swarmers" and dropped out. After surviving for a while, I was toast. The next game, I was relocating so much that I should have bought stock in U-Haul.

sorry for the long post, Thanks for all the great games this weekend!!

Scarab,

Fun games. Gotta make sure to pay attention to your slingers! I'm sure you will not Hkey them again?

Both games were fun, I got to play baby so it was a little different. BUD was a good player (Yellow) but in the 1st game both of you lacked siege so the land gobble with baby (Towers, cats and scythes) let me take over the map on that side. I was able to do that in the second game also against a your non-siege civs. In the second game Strat_Caesar did a great job of holding of Hittite with Roman. Since I knew Baby wouldn't be much help to him (I was in the hole on continental) I decided to go up neil's side against the no-siege civs while tribbing Strat_Caesar (5000+ @ the end of the game). After we fought off your early rush, neil took the sea, I towered and consolidated your former land, and then in more of a war of attrition opposed to elegant victory we were able to close you guys out. Was a fun game and certainly a higher level of competition in multi-player than usual.

Hope to cya around.

I kept missing you this weekend Scarab. I missed Number6 also (he was taking a backgammon lesson). I played with random partners all weekend and it was ok but I would rather play with fellow forummers. I will catch you this week hopefully. If we could get enough forummers playing each other it would eliminate the chance of having uneven teams and it would be a lot more fun! See yall on the Zone!

Hi Scarab

In that first game, I was a few seconds away from finishing my wall across the shallow when green hit me with archers and 2 camels. I tried 2 times to finish the wall but my vills were killed each time.

Green took Phoeny in what was a slow civ game. Usually when that happens I assume the Phoeny player doesn't know how to take advantage of Phoeny's attributes properly. That was not the case with green. he was a star in that game. I had forward built a barracks in his area and intended to do a little axer attack during the bronze transition but I never got a chance as I was running from the phoeny compy, camel, ST horde that was literally filling our side of the map.

I was in good shape to rebuild with 1000 food, and fishing boats bringing in more but he had infested the map so fully that I was soon discovered at both of my new locations and wiped out. My fleeing villagers ran right into another group of green compies on my way to our allies base.....game over for me!

The second game was good for about 30 minute but the opposing team had very little coordination. Blue was next to me and fought hard but their middle ally was untouched and never came to his aid. When SpeedJoint and I attacked the middle opponent, he was iron with a ton of cats. He resigned pretty soon as our constant pressure sapped him of resources for replacing thosecats. He should have helped his Blue ally, whom I sure was seriously upset at the lack of support.

Hey, that was a lot of fun. Thinking back on that first game, you rushed me in stone with villies & clubmen (what else?), and I thought I fought you off pretty good. When I got to tool, I sent over a small band of axers, which I felt did some damage.

Now, I am thinking I should have sent over another 1/2 dozen or so of those guys. Do you think such a move would have been a waste of time given the circumstances?

I think I was afraid to do this, because the stone rush left me behind in the upgrade game, but looking back it seems like a good counter move.

It was a great counter Kurtiebird. Actually it caught me with my pants down and did a lot of damage. My main goal with the clubmen was (obviously) to hurt your economy and kill/distract as many vils as possible.

Another six axeman/scouts/archers would have pushed me into a full retreat. Then again, I think General sent down compies to help my sorry town :-)

Like I said, the most fun I've had in the Zone yet.

I look forward to 'round 2' (3,4..)

You racked up a ton of kills (at my expense) early in the first game (29+)

Kurtie, you played that first game very well, I was the one the blew it. I tend to fight very aggressive and held back a bit on Field (thinking no fun blasting the newbies, LOL). Big mistake, never give the opposition the initiative.

I keep thinking everything will be ok, and Field kicked my butt. I got my revenge on him the next game. And, I certainly gave him a best performance. I was just ticked that I didn't have a better starting area that I could have hit Field alittle earlier w/ tool units.

Oh well, thanks for the games.

Yeah, hee hee. I think that first victory might have been more of a result of me picking minoan to go against Phoeny, instead of my wonderful playing capability. Next game, you picked minoan too, and just about the time that my improved upgrade finished, and the first camels were popping out, two camel riders run into my base....I thought -no fair, he must be shang... Whena bunch of improved bowmen strolled in next to my gold source - both mines were RIGHT next to each other - and then magically turned into compies, I learned my mistake...Next time, we wall. Those were the most enjoyable games I've played in AGES. haha, a pun. Sort of.

Cool, thanks guys.

Speaking of walling, I learned that lesson oh-too-recently. Our newly formed VVV clan, made up of me and several co-workers, play every week or so on our LAN.

Well, I've been on the winning team the last several games, by virtue of luck, but the rest of the group has been trying hard to end that streak.

Well, Monday I made some crucial mistakes:

  1. I touched an artifact in my area, giving away my position. Mostly bad because everyone wanted to gang up on me.

  2. I reverted to the bad habit of not stone mining, and consequently didn't build any walls or towers

  3. My scout reveal a band of axers, about 8...hmm, will they attack? Duh!

Actually, I would have had adequate defenses for the axeman rush, but no, I was triple teamed instead. I ended up having to pack up and relocate.
